Blepharoplasty is the word for “eyelid surgery,” and many people have it done for cosmetic reasons, but you may be experiencing one of the five signs that make you a good candidate for blepharoplasty that are not necessarily cosmetic. We will examine the five signs that you would be a candidate for blepharoplasty to find out if the procedure would be something that you wish to pursue.
1. Is It Difficult for You to See?
Are your eyelids drooping so that the skin obstructs your vision? Obstructed vision is one of the most common reasons that people have blepharoplasty. The sagging causes the skin to droop over your eyes so that it narrows your field of vision. It is most noticeable when you are looking upward or to the side. If you fail to have this corrected early, it can become much worse as time goes on.
This means that this condition becomes more uncomfortable over time and increases dangerous situations for you. If this is the case, blepharoplasty will not be a cosmetic procedure; it will be medically necessary to improve your ability to function throughout the day.
2. Are Your Eyes Functioning Properly?
If you cannot open your eyes fully, this prevents them from functioning as they should. “Ptosis” is a condition where the muscles of the upper eyelid grow weaker and then are unable to open your eyes as they did when you were younger. When this causes muscle fatigue, it leads to headaches caused by the constant fight to keep the eyes open. Blepharoplasty improves this condition by adjusting the muscles, tightening the skin, and creating a smoother appearance that allows your eyelids to move easily.
3. Do You Have Bags Under Your Eyes?
Blepharoplasty also addresses sagging under the eyes. When this occurs, it has the effect of making you look tired, unhappy, or elderly. You may experience bagginess underneath your eyes temporarily, but if it is a persistent condition, blepharoplasty may be the answer for you. With a lower blepharoplasty, the plastic surgeon removes fat deposits and saggy skin underneath the eye so that you look much younger.
4. Do You Have Wrinkles?
Wrinkles underneath your eyes make you look older or tired, and this requires more drastic measures than laser treatments. With a lower blepharoplasty, the surgeon repositions the tissues underneath your eyes and removes the excess skin. This creates a smoother appearance, and you look wide awake in the middle of the day.
5. Are Your Eyes Irritated?
Excess skin on the upper or lower eyelids irritates the eyes as you blink. The excess skin can rub against the whites of your eyes, and this causes discomfort from infections and redness. You may be applying topical medications, but you can put these medications away after you have the extra skin and fat removed with a blepharoplasty procedure.
Patients can have blepharoplasty procedures on the upper and/or lower eyelids of one or both eyes. Your surgeon makes an incision in your crease to remove the excess fat and skin. This prevents a significant scar from forming and makes your eyes appear as they did when you were younger. It’s a “win-win” situation!
