The Pretty Reckless
When thinking of rock 'n' roll babes slaying the modern music game, The Pretty Reckless's Taylor Momsen likely comes to mind. Her boundless talent & fearless determination to follow her voice has shaken the rock world to its very core. At only 23, she's conquered more mountains than one can climb in a lifetime; like ditching the acting world to live her truth and become a world-touring shredder. Momsen is living proof that if you follow your voice and pursue your passion with vigilance, you might just earn your way to the top.
Luck wasn't a necessary factor of Momsen's success. Her diversity, raw talent and gut feeling to create her own style of music outlived her acting career, propelling her to a lifestyle all her own. She traded in the set of Gossip Girl and The Grinch for recording studios and stages where she now performs in front of audiences of thousands. Writing has proven to be her vessel when tapping into her inner creativity, "[it] kind of encompasses everything, especially with rock 'n' roll. It’s why I love it so much. It’s freedom." Letting the latitude of her vision take the wheel, Momsen has paved her way to success with her bold style, limitless stage presence & unapologetic passion towards representing her own truth.
After the return of their intense 2 year tour, The Pretty Reckless hit the ground running and began creating what would soon become their latest album Who You Selling For. "[We were all] pretty exhausted, but at the same time we were really itching for new material, so we jumped into the writing process fairly quickly," she recalls. Thriving off the fuel of making music, it's the ignited fire within them that's earned their way to the top of the Mainstream Rock Charts.
Their latest album made crashing waves in still-water with its multi-dimensional, genre-infused hits. The Pretty Reckless blend soulful modern blues with heavy, psych-filled tangents curated into effortless anthems, like 'Prisoner' and 'Oh My God.' It's this exact certainty that allows them the liberty to expand their sound while remaining grounded in their lyrical roots. "We really kind of open our minds and just let it take us where it’s gonna take us and then naturally, as you’re writing a record, common themes start to develop because in a sense you’re capturing a moment in time and a moment in your life," she eludes, "there’s different sounds to different songs but they all kind of come from the same place." Between their hard-hitting lyrics and mesmerizing guitar solos, you'll find the deep rooted independence in which they built their foundation.
The band continues to celebrate new highs as their 10 year anniversary & yet another world-tour are just around the corner. After traveling an estimated 326,988 miles together accumulated from countless hours on tour, the band has undoubtedly became "family at this point." But what bounds them more than their ambitious, non-stop touring and passion for rock 'n' roll? I can hear a smile in Momsen's tone as she gushes, "it’s all of our identity! It’s not just something we love, it’s who we are. I don’t think any of us would know what to do with ourselves if we weren’t making music!" Not all bands are made to last, but sometimes when the cosmos align, magic happens. "We’re just very lucky that we met at the right time & had a chemistry that works & has been able to last this long - ‘cause I think that that’s rare." And undoubtedly, The Pretty Reckless are a rare breed.
Although there is no definitive algorithm to success, Momsen seems to have subconsciously cracked the code. "It's a long way to the top" but If you want to make waves of your own in the rock world, there's no cutting corners. "It’s not easy but, at the same time, there is no greater job at the end of the day. If you love it with every ounce of your being then work hard at it & dedicate yourself to it, because there is no half-assing it."
