4 Clever Ways to Decorate Your Home for Summer With Flags

Summer is a great time to decorate with flags. More people are outdoors to see and enjoy them. The weather is generally good, so they won’t get ruined in rain or snow. It might be the most patriotic season of the year, kicking off with Memorial Day and including both the Fourth of July and the lesser-known but still important Flag Day. But you may have other types of flags you want to display as well, such as flags that show your allegiance to a sports team. There are a number of ways to make flags part of your summer home decor.

1- Hanging Flags

This is probably what you think of when you first imagine decorating with flags, and it is a tried-and-true approach. Flags hung outside from a flagpole mounted to your house or in your yard are the traditional way to display them, and it’s still a great decorating idea. But there are other ways to hang flags as well. For example, if you have a balcony, you can hang them from there. Even in summer, the weather isn’t nice 24/7. When you want to protect your flag from the elements but still display it, you can hang it on the wall inside or from the ceiling.

2- Stick Flags

Smaller handheld or stick flags can inspire a variety of decorating ideas. If you’re having a party or any other kind of gathering, you can line a driveway or walkway with them. You can also use them to border a garden or another area. They can adorn cakes or cupcakes as well.

3- Flowers and Centerpieces

There are many versatile ways to use smaller flags, including stick flags. These include putting them in plant pots or among flowers or placing several in a dish to use as the centerpiece for a meal. You can also put a collection of them in a jar that complements the flags and the feel that you are going for. For example, if you have vintage flags or want to convey that feeling, you could put them in a Mason jar or a decorative vintage vase.

4- Bunting Ideas

Summer is a great time to break out the bunting, and flag bunting is a terrific way to decorate for a party or any other special occasion. You can also just hang out the bunting because the weather is terrific. String it above an outdoor area where you plan to serve food or drinks or hang it along a railing. You can also put it in some of the same places you’d put a single large flag, such as hanging it on a wall or from a balcony.

If you are decorating with American flags, you may want to review guidelines for flag etiquette to ensure that you are handling them and displaying them with the respect that you intend. Whatever types of flags you decide to use, these are just a few of the ways you can use them to show your patriotism, your support for a team, or another sentiment in a fun and attractive way.
