“California is known for being pet-friendly, yet the reality is far more complex,” Andrea explains. “Millions of renters, myself included, face barriers to finding suitable housing for their pets. This project is deeply personal and reflects my belief that art can shed light on these challenges while fostering empathy and driving change.”
Andrea and her team at Artistic Zone Inc. began their initiative with an immersive mixed-media artwork that seeks to tell a story from the perspective of pets themselves. At the heart of the piece lies a poignant metaphor: the joy of a home is conveyed through playful imagery, while the exclusionary policies that deny pets access are starkly symbolized by a bold red “No Pets Allowed” sign. To create an authentic emotional connection, Andrea incorporated materials imbued with personal meaning, including felted wool made from her dog’s fur.
“The artwork isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about provoking thought and dialogue,” Andrea shares. “By using colors dogs can perceive—shades of blue and yellow—the piece invites viewers to step into their world. The red sign, a color dogs cannot see, represents the incomprehension they face when separated from the homes and humans they love.”
While the artwork serves as a powerful centerpiece, the project extends beyond the canvas. Andrea and her team are producing a short documentary that amplifies the voices of pet owners who have experienced the emotional and logistical challenges of navigating housing restrictions. “Every interview we conduct reveals a profound connection between people and their pets,” Andrea notes. “For many, pets are family. The stories we’ve gathered not only highlight the systemic issues but also emphasize the resilience of these bonds.”
