How Does The Masked Singer Conceal Contestant’s Identities?

The Masked Singer is a reality singing competition that aired in the United States for the first time in 2019. Although The Masked Singer follows the standard singing competition format, where singers perform and a panel of judges chooses whether to eliminate the contestants or keep them on the show, it has introduced a unique twist in the form of disguises.

During each season of The Masked Singer, contestants must keep their identities a secret from the judges, other staff, and each other using various methods. While this may sound tricky, if not impossible, the show’s creators have developed some creative ways to ensure success.

How Are Identities Kept Secret on The Masked Singer?

Code Names

Each celebrity contestant on The Masked Singer has a code name, such as Fox, Peacock, or Jester. The contestants are required to only use these code names throughout their time on the show. Once a contestant gets eliminated, he or she will reveal their identity.

NDAs

All audience members are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement, or NDA, upon arrival at the venue. In addition, their phones are locked up for the duration of the show.

Contestants are also allowed to reveal their participation to a select few of their friends and family. These individuals are also required to sign NDAs.

Disguises

Contestants must be in disguise at all times, even when backstage, to keep their identities a secret from one another. In addition, anyone accompanying the contestant, such as a family member or assistant, must also be disguised.

Security Guards

Each celebrity is constantly surrounded by security guards. Security guards are also present in large numbers throughout the studio and grounds.

Isolation

All judges, contestants, viewers, and staff are required to stay in designated areas when the show is not filming, and conversing is kept to a minimum. Judges stay on different soundstages, viewers are not allowed to leave to use the restroom once the show starts filming, and contestants cannot talk to staff while offstage.

Despite the intensity of The Masked Singer’s protocols, the show’s popularity has continued to rise since its inception. It is beloved by contestants, judges, viewers, and staff, which is why it has gained such popularity.
