Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in travel, style, and food. Hope you have a nice stay!

Transmit Festival

Transmit Festival

FACT: #TRANSMIT was forged in the heart of a graffiti covered, body painted & camouflaged alien, burst out by blaring electronic house music, and that is how the underground dance party that became TRANSMIT was born. Because the world is still not ready for aliens to invade on a mass scale, our underground music festival is part of a community dedicated to developing unique, intimate live music and art experiences. TRANSMIT is produced by TanZ group, an entertainment company focused on creating ground-breaking experiences and original content to connect artists and musicians with their audiences. From live performances, to music publishing & licensing, as well as content creation TanZ collaborates closely with artists from around the world and beyond. We are producers, entrepreneurs, technologists, and composers who are passionate about bringing artists and their fans together.

You are given the ability to transmit a message to aliens in outerspace. What do you tell them? (Or, perhaps, what track would you play for them and why?)
I'd beam them "Safe" by CAN. I just heard it today and thought it sounded like it was from outer space. Holger and the boys were tapped into some extraterrestrial rhythms, so I'm sure the aliens would dig it.

Trina Merry is working on a crazy installation throughout the day. If you were able to have her paint anything or paint you as anything in the world, what would it be and why?
Her work is astounding. I'd love her to either paint me into a busy Tokyo street during the middle of the day, or a desert shot amidst red earth and rocks with a bright blue sky above the horizon.

What did you think of Transmit overall? Are you excited for next year?
I love being a part firsts. You could tell the people who were there felt the same as well. I'd gladly be a part of Transmit again and am excited to see the concept grow.

The problem with this is that it’s been done in such a great way with the voyager records. The gold records that went out on voyager which I’m a big space nerd. I love StarTrek and stuff like that. The voyager record did it. The hello in all the human languages plus some binary code in there. I don’t know what would come across well…. The sound of a human heartbeat I guess would be the message because that also kind of relates; they say dance music and that music in general pulls you in because, particularly dance music, because it emulates the sound of the human heartbeat and that all the dance music frequencies are usually on 60-70 beats per minute which is average for the human heart beat and dance rhythms usually reflect that. I don’t know I’ve always heard that.

If you send them just the whole Beatles catalogue and maybe Miles Davis, you’re set. Yes Miles Davis deserves to be in space. He was kind of out there anyway. I think that encapsulates all of humanity right there. Miles Davis and the sound of the human heart.

I’m huge fan of the human robots, the silver they use with the street performers. To just get us done as a trio of gold or silver street performers would be pretty neat.

Or if she could paint John Lennon with all of his talent and everything that came with him. Even if he’s old still that would be good. Or just paint me all in gold. Girls like gold, right? Yes girls like gold. You could be gold and the rest of us would be copper. We’d have to be some lesser precious metal.

Unlike probably most people here, we have a long standing relationship with the guys.  Craig Edwards and Garrett Chau who are a big part of this, they are a huge part of who we are as well, because that was the team that used to run Avalon8 or 9 years ago and they brought us on board as residents in January in 2007 and that was really the beginning of our career if you will as DJs. And in many ways it was the beginning of the deep house movement in LA. Becoming big in LA. So we’ve known them for a long time.  They’re like family in that sense. Whatever they’re involved with, if they ask us to be involved, we’ll be involved with it.

And I think they’ve done a wonderful job from the production and professional standpoint. Everything is just amazing. Particularly from festival from an artist standpoint. Those are the most important things. They took care of the artists.

American Pie by Don McLean, but one track for alien’s it’s not enough. Like I could never decide. Maybe if I could send them a bunch of songs, like what I’m listening to at home, the classic rock stuff like Led Zepplin, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, stuff like that. But then you have like Bach and Beethoven and there is so much good music. Really they just need to come here.

I love art and I have a lot of favorite artists like Egon Schiele but I wouldn’t put that art on a human body.  Maybe like the last supper? Because it’s so fucking huge and it’s going to take a lot of people. It’s going to be an orgy.Trina Merry is working on a crazy installation throughout the day. It was great working with them. Beforehand it was good and I’ve been taken care of and the production is very good.

Well, I’d probably tell them not to come here. Just, go to the next planet. It’s probably just not that great. If they can hear this message, they’re probably doing way better than we are. But maybe if I played them some nice music, like some Chopin piano pieces maybe then they would want to come here. So, we’ll go with that.

Yeah, for sure. Actually I’ve been getting into it more, lately than before. I mean, my dad always played classical stuff but, but I wasn’t really into it and then now I’ve been listening to it more and more.

I mean, I don’t know. That’s super wide open. Yeah, I guess she could paint people into the Berlin wall. Like, on top of stuff that’s already done. So that they’re like kind of camouflaged into it. That could be interesting. I don’t know, I go there a lot, so, it has all this crazy graffiti all over it, so that would be cool. And it’s a historical landmark.

What did you think of Transmit overall? Are you excited for next year?
I mean, the whole entire lineup is people I like and friends of mine. So that’s relaly nice, cause that doesn’t happen very often anywhere. And it’s a new thing. It’s cool. It’s right in downtown, it’s nice. It’s a really great place to have a party, if it wasn’t so hot today. Sound was great, everything was super on point, organization’s good. So, yeah I had fun. Go to the ice cream truck.

The message I would send is “Do not trust us”. And the track that I would play for that is maybe, um, the whole Paranoid album by Black Sabbath.

I would have her paint Charlotte Rampling into the most comfortable bed ever.

What did you think of Transmit overall? Are you excited for next year?
I would. I always work with anybody whose interested in having us come by. I think it’s important to form those kind of relationships over time.

I always like to do the Interstellar reference of “Stay, stay”. But for a musical reference there’s probably something deeper. For me, the message would say, “Don’t come yet.” That’s what I would say. I’d be like, “Don’t come yet. Wait about 5,000 years.” Until [we mess up the planet, or until] we sort shit out. Either or, I’m an optimist so I don’t think it’s all going to go downhill. I hope we can sort it out. But that’s what I would say. I wouldn’t say “come over, you’re welcome!” It’s like having guests over when you [unintelligible]. Nobody wants to be like, “Oh let’s throw a party!” “But I’m not there, I’m like, in Tahoe.” You don’t want to be that guy.

Water.

That’s hard to paint

It is, but you said anything in the world, right? Either that, or having George McFly giving Biff Tannen a wedgie. Because I don’t lie Biff Tannen. And I just saw the trilogy like, three days ago. That’s one of my favorite movies. 21st of October, 2015. That’s the day.

What did you think of Transmit overall? Are you excited for next year?
Hospitalty’s been great. The lights and the stage, I was super surprised when I came in here, and it was like, 100 degrees, full on sun in your face, and I could still see the LED lights. Which is usually not what happens.

Also we have a couple of different projects, working within a couple different facets of the Tans group as well, and I guess from the beginning its been like, their enthusiasm as well. They love to pay attention to details and they’re gung ho about how they do things, so we’ve kind of been accepted on as one of their artists they’re going to be working with in terms of their licensing facet, and some of their other, like, orchestral composition and stuff, so it’s been nice to kind of become part of the family, I guess so to speak. It’s cool to be here, especially since it’s our home town. And it’s such a cool venue. The layout of the space is amazing. The only movie studio in downtown LA and the city is so full of studios. We’re so in the middle of it, because we live in Hollywood, and I drive up Gower every day, and I see all of these studios. It was Jake’s birthday last week and we went to Universal Studios, just for fun.

We went on the rides, and we eventually took the studio tour. And you get this like, “oh, cool” and this is what the city’s about, having these back lot studios where people can go into these sound stages, where the world just stops. Time stops, and it’s whatever you make of it. And even though we’re not in the sound stages right now, we’re between them, just being here and having this for a memory 10, 20, 30 years from now and saying, “Oh yeah, I remember when I played there, they make movies there, like Batman Comes Back from the Grave Six Times XXI”.
