It was mid afternoon on a chilly day in Downtown Los Angeles. Tamara Taylor arrived on set looking super pulled together yet casual in fitted boyfriend jeans, a tank, and fitted trench coat. I immediately took note of her poise when entering a room. You may know Tamara as Camille Saroyan on the hit television show Bones or Grace on Party of Five. Taylor has also appeared on shows such as CSI Miami, Sex, Love & Secrets, and NCIS. Upon meeting her, I could see why she has had so much success in the entertainment industry. She simply is someone who lights up a room and exudes confidence; the type of woman you immediately want to be best friends with. After her photoshoot, we had a chance to chat about what it's like to be on such a long running show, how her style differs from Cam's, her two rescue pups, and how she stays in such great shape.
We delved right into discussing the success of Bones, and, after eleven seasons together, Tamara explained exactly how close the cast has gotten. “Being on set is so fun. We laugh a lot, we've been through people getting married and cast members having babies. We really are like a family. I find myself adopting mannerisms from some of them and I'm like, wait, where did that come from?!" But when asked how her and her character Cam differ in reality, both in fashion and demeanor, Tamara is quick to answer, “Oh my gosh, I don't think we could be more different! I love the fitted, feminine pieces Cam wears, but I am definitely more laid back than Cam is in my real life.”
That is actually apparent as she warmly tells me how I have to try her favorite dim sum restaurant and we share our favorite secret hiking spots. She is so easy-going, it truly felt like I was catching up with someone I had known for years. As we get on the topic of hiking, I had to ask her how she keeps her incredible physique. She smiled and confessed that she hasn’t gone to an actual gym in quite some time. “You know, I am very active and I find hiking to be very meditative, though it’s been a little while since I’ve set foot in an actual gym, but I have really taught myself to avoid sugar. I used to be the type of person who would forego an entire meal for a big piece of cake. Now it’s all about eliminating sugars and eating lots of fish and veggies.”
Though it’s hard to imagine that she has much free time on her hands with her filming schedule, I ask how she enjoys spending her down-time. “It sounds so cliche, but I love going to see movies. I love going out for a good meal and having a nice glass of wine and I love reading but it's been quite a while since I've had the time. I used to be able to finish an entire book in a day. I just love immersing myself in a good book. There's nothing better.” We continued to discuss all the new movies coming out this season, and Tamara tells of how excited she is to see the new Star Wars once she is back in Toronto for the holidays. She explains that the original Star Wars was the first movie she ever saw in theaters, and how it was one of the moments that she looked up and decided she wanted to be involved in the entertainment industry. It was Star Wars and seeing a double feature of Mahogany and Lady Sings the Blues with Diana Ross that pushed Tamara to a career as an actress. It’s no surprise that Tamara has followed in Diana’s footsteps portraying strong female roles. At first, she didn’t want to get pigeonholed into only playing authoritative on-screen roles, but now she embraces it. “You know, Emily [Deschanel], Michaela [Conlin], and I were just discussing this the other day. At first I didn’t want to get typecast because I have this kind of deep, assertive voice but now it’s really cool to be on a show that really celebrates that.” And if you’ve ever watched Bones, you know that 3 of their lead characters are in fact very strong, intelligent women which, in Hollywood, is certainly not the norm (yet). “[The industry] is getting a lot better but I definitely think that [Bones creator] Hart Hanson has always been ahead of the curve with that sort of thing.”
Along with her passion for film, reading and fitness, we found ourselves swapping stories about our dogs. Tamara explained that she is deeply involved with local rescues and has two chihuahua mixes that she adores. “Rescuing is the only way to get an animal in my opinion. I actually just did a photoshoot for an animal rescue and there was this super sweet but timid pit bull and, towards the end of the shoot, I sent a friend of mine who was looking for a dog to adopt a photo of him saying, I'm not sure why but I think this dog is meant to be yours. Within days she had adopted him. There's nothing better than when a rescue dog finds their forever home.” With a heart of gold, killer style, and a career that shows no signs of slowing down, Tamara Taylor is certainly a force to be reckoned with.
